An imagined scene: in the backyard of this countryside Japanese residence is a Zen garden. There is no development as far as the eye can see; the rolling hills are the heart and soul of the agrarian society comprising this prefecture. Rather than enclose the garden on three sides with bamboo fencing, the family opted to build a stone wall. A planter is built into the stone, and a bonsai tree is being cultivated through the collective efforts of family members. At the completion of their individual meditative sessions, each family member takes a moment to perform an assigned task in support of the bonsai tree. While performing the assigned task, the individual stands facing the wall and in doing so, sees beyond the bonsai and takes in the beauty of Fujisan.
Beyond the Bonsai
The original 9 x 12 inch water colour is protected with a clear acrylic layer to prolong colors and the life of the work. As with any photo or piece of art, care should be taken that the work is not hung in a location where it is exposed to extended sunlight.
